Basic Requirements for Construction Exams
- You must be at least eighteen years of age.
- You must be of good moral character.
In ADDITION, you must have at least four years of "active experience" (as a worker) in your trade/scope of work as set forth below which includes at least one year of supervisory experience (college degrees/credits may be substituted for 1-3 years of work experience) :
General Contractor: services are unlimited as to the type of work which he/she may do (residential/commercial buildings unlimited height)
Structurally-related experience in commercial construction of four or more stories in four or more of the following: foundation/slabs in excess of twenty thousand square feet; masonry walls; steel erection; elevated slabs; precast concrete structures; column erection; formwork for structural reinforced concrete.
Building Contractor: services limited to construction of commercial and single or multiple dwelling residential buildings not exceeding 3 stories in height
Structurally-related experience in commercial construction of up to three stories in four or more of the following: foundation/slabs in excess of twenty thousand square feet; masonry walls; steel erection; elevated slabs; precast concrete structures; column erection; formwork for structural reinforced concrete.
Residential Contractor: services limited to construction, remodeling, repair or improvement of one, two or three-family residences not exceeding two habitable stories
Structurally-related experience in residential construction in four or more of the following: foundation/slabs; masonry walls; trusses; structural wood framing (excluding platform framing); column erection; formwork for structural reinforced concrete.
Sheet Metal Contractor: services unlimited in sheet metal trade
Manufacture, fabrication, assembling, handling, erection, installation, dismantling, conditioning, adjustment, insulation, alteration, repair, servicing, or design of ferrous or nonferrous metal work of U.S. No. 10 gauge or its equivalent or lighter gauge and of other materials including fiberglass.
Mechanical Contractor: services unlimited in these activities
Install, maintain, repair, fabricate, alter, extend, or design central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system. Does NOT include liquefied petroleum gas fuel lines within buildings, potable water lines or connections, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring.
Class "A" Air Conditioning Contractor: services unlimited in these activities
Install, maintain, repair, fabricate, alter, extend, or design central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating systems and duct work in connection with a complete system only to the extent that it is necessary to complete an air-distribution system, boiler and unfired pressure vessel systems, and all appurtenances, apparatus, or equipment used in connection with them. Does NOT include work with liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuel lines within buildings, potable water lines or connections, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring.
Class "B" Air Conditioning Contractor: services limited to 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTU of heating in any one system
Install, maintain, repair, fabricate, alter, extend, or design central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system. Does NOT include work
with liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuel lines within buildings, potable water lines or connections, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring. One year must be "supervisory" (as in "foreman").
Roofing Contractor: services are unlimited in roofing trade
Install, maintain, repair, alter, extend, or design and use materials and items used in the installation, maintenance, extension, and alteration of all kinds of roofing, waterproofing, and coating, except when coating is not represented to protect, repair, waterproof, stop leaks, or extend the life of the roof.
Commercial Pool Contractor: services include construction, repair, and services of any pool or hot tub/spa (public, private or otherwise)
Construction, repair, and servicing of any swimming pool, or hot tub or spa, including the repair or replacement of existing equipment or the installation of new equipment as necessary; the layout, excavation, operation of construction pumps for dewatering purposes, steelwork, installation of light niches, construction of floors, guniting, fiberglassing, installation of tile and coping, installation of all perimeter and filter piping, installation of all filter equipment and chemical feeders of any type, plastering of the interior, construction of decks, construction of equipment rooms or housing for pool equipment, installation of package pool heaters; the scope of work of a swimming pool/spa servicing contractor (water treatment or cleaning of pool). Does NOT include direct connections to a sanitary sewer system or to potable water lines.
Residential Pool Contractor: services limited to residential construction, repair and servicing of pools, hot tubs or spas
Construction, repair, and servicing of a residential swimming pool, or hot tub or spa, including the repair or replacement of existing equipment or the installation of new equipment as necessary; the layout, excavation, operation of construction pumps for dewatering purposes, steelwork, installation of light niches, construction of floors, guniting, fiberglassing, installation of tile and coping, installation of all perimeter and filter piping, installation of all filter equipment and chemical feeders of any type, plastering of the interior, construction of decks, installation of housing for pool equipment, installation of package pool heaters; the scope of work of a swimming pool/spa servicing contractor (water treatment or cleaning of pool). Does NOT include direct connections to a sanitary sewer system or to potable water lines.
Pool Servicing Contractor: services limited to servicing and repair of pool/hot tub/spa
Servicing and repair of pools/hot tubs/spas including piping and repairs, replacement and repair of existing equipment or installation of new additional equipment. Work includes reinstallation of tile and coping, repair and replacement of all piping, filter equipment, and chemical feeders of any type, replastering, reconstruction of decks, and reinstallation or addition of pool heaters; installation, construction, modification, disassembly or replacement of equipment permanently attached to and associated with the pool or spa for the purpose of water treatment or cleaning.
Plumbing Contractor: services to install, maintain, repair, alter, extend or design plumbing
Installing, maintaining, repairing, altering, extending or designing sanitary drainage or storm drainage facilities, venting systems, public or private water supply systems, septic tanks, drainage and supply wells, swimming pool piping; irrigation systems, or solar heating water system and appurtenances (excluding liquid petroleum gases) and storm and sanitary sewer lines; water and sewer plants and substations; design and installation, maintenance, repair, alteration or extension of air-piping, vacuum line piping, oxygen line piping, nitrous oxide piping, and all related medical gas systems; fire line standpipes and fire sprinklers, ink and chemical lines; fuel oil and gasoline piping and tank and pump installation (except bulk storage plants) and pneumatic control piping systems.
Underground Utilities and Excavation Contractor: services limited to these activities
Construction, installation, and repair of main sanitary sewer collection systems, main water distribution systems, storm sewer collection systems, the continuation of utility lines from the main systems to point of termination
up to including the meter location for individual occupancy, sewer collection systems at property line on residential or single-occupancy commercial properties, or on multi-occupancy properties at manhole or wye lateral extended to an invert elevation as engineered to accommodate future building sewers, water distribution systems, or storm sewer collection systems at storm sewer structures; and install empty underground conduits in rights-of-way, easements, platted rights-of-way in new site development, and sleeves for parking lot crossings no smaller than 2" in diameter, provided that each conduit system installed is designed by a licensed professional engineer or an authorized employee of a municipality, county, or public utility and not including conductor wiring or connection to energized electrical systems. Does NOT install any piping integral to fire protection system beginning at the point where piping is used exclusively for such system.
Solar Contractor: services installing, altering, repairing, maintaining, replacing solar panels
Installation, alteration, repair, maintenance, relocation, or replacement of solar panels for potable solar water heating systems, swimming pool solar heating systems, and photovoltaic systems and any appurtenances, apparatus, or equipment used in connection with these systems.
Pollutant Storage Contractor: services limited to pollutant storage tanks
Installation maintenance, repair, alteration, extension, or design and use of materials and items used in the installation, maintenance, extension, alteration of pollutant storage tanks.
Specialty Structure Contractor: services limited to these activities
Fabrication, assembling, handling, erection, installation, replacement, dismantling, adjustment, alteration, repair, servicing and design work in aluminum, metal, canvas, vinyl and fiberglass screening, doors and windows, hurricane protection devices and allied construction materials.
Drywall Specialty Contractor: services limited to drywall
Installation of all necessary and incidental metal accessories, including non-load bearing metal studs, runners, hangers, channels, metal suspension accessories and prefabricated ceiling materials, and the preparation of surface over which drywall product is applied, including application of base and finish coats. Does NOT include plastering, block, or wood partitions.
Glass and Glazing Specialty Contractor: services limited to windows and glass
Installation and attachment of all types of windows and glass, whether fixed or movable; installation of swinging or sliding glass doors to existing walls, floors, columns or other structural members of the building; installation of glass holding or supporting mullions or horizontal bars attached to existing walls, floors, columns or other structural members of the building, and the cutting and installation of glass and mirrors; installation of prefabricated glass, metal or plastic curtain walls or panels, caulking incidental to such work and assembly, and installation of shower and tub enclosures and metal fascias.
Marine Specialty Contractor: services limited to docks and marine activities
Construction, repair, alteration, extension and excavation for fixed docks, floating docks, boathouses, mooring devices, mooring fields, seawalls, bulkheads, piers, wharfs, boatlifts, boat ramps, revetments, cofferdams, wave attenuators, dune crossovers and other marine structures and activities including pile driving, framing, concrete, masonry, dredge and fill, and wood shingle, wood shakes, or asphalt or fiberglass shingle roofing on new structures.
Swimming Pool Specialty Contractors: services limited in scope for specific purposes
Scope of work is limited to specific categories listed below and must work under contract and under the supervision of licensed contractor - each category is a separate license: Swimming Pool Layout Specialty Contractor; Swimming Pool Structural Specialty Contractor; Swimming Pool Excavation Specialty Contractor; Swimming Pool Trim Specialty Contractor; Swimming Pool Decking Specialty Contractor; Swimming Pool Piping Specialty Contractor; Swimming Pool Finishes Specialty Contractor.
